The Prime Minister will lead a delegation to Papua New Guinea to attend the annual Pacific Islands Forum Leaders' meeting.
The delegation will include Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully and a small group of business leaders.
John Key said issues on the agenda at the forum would include climate change and fisheries, as well as wider development and political issues.
Mr Key will depart on 8 September, returning on 11 September.
