American Samoa census puts population at 55,500

Results from the latest census of American Samoa has put the population count at 55,500 people on April the 1st, 2010.

The figure, released by the United States Census Bureau, represents a decrease of 3.1 percent or 1,772 people from the 2000 census population of 57,000.

The Tuala-uta District has recorded the largest population of just over 20,000 people, followed by Ma'uputasi with just over 10,000.

Of the 77 villages in the territory, Tafuna has the highest population at almost 8,000.

Sili village in the territory's Manu'a island group has the smallest population with only 5 people.
