The Solomon Islands prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, says his door is open for Australian prime minister John Howard to come and try and resolve a diplomatic row.

Mr Sogavare says he stands by the decision to declare the Australian high commissioner, Patrick Cole, persona non grata, on Tuesday.

He wants to talk the matter through but says Australia's move to tighten visa requirements makes this difficult.

"Oh well I have written to him but he has closed his door to all Solomon Islands politicians entering Australia and that is a move in the opposite direction. What this issue really needs is for us to continue to talk person to person. I am actually opening my door for Australian politicans to come. Even John Howard is welcome to come."

The Solomon's opposition leader, Fred Fono, has called on the government to quickly resolve the row.

He says the row could impact on Australia's bilateral aid which Solomon Islands needs, especially as it rebuilds itself.
