Reports from New Caledonia say the Thio mine site of the SLN nickel company remains shut on instigation of the pro-independence FLNKS movement.

Road blocks in the Noumea area were lifted at the weekend amid expectations of more talks about the future of New Caledonia's nickel sector, trriggered by the protests.

Last week's announcement of the sale of the Vale plant to a new consortium worsened the unrest, with protest action also hampering SLN's operation.

Pro-independence politicians and Kanak chiefs are opposed to a Swiss commodity trader Trafigura being part of any consortium that could take over the Vale assets.

Tonight, the FLNKS leadership is due to hold a video conference with the overseas minister Sebastien Lecornu on the way forward.

The government of the Southern Province, where the Vale plant is located, backs the sale plan announced last week in the expectation that the plant's 3,000 employees keep their jobs.
