Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis says he's confident he will retain the seat, despite the announcement that a judicial recount is to take place.
Electoral Commission officials will look at the votes again after Mana Movement leader Hone Harawira applied to the District Court for a recount.
He lost the Maori seat by 739 votes to Labour's Kelvin Davis in last month's election.
The Mana Movement said hundreds of votes in the seat were discarded because voters were supposedly not enrolled.
But Mr Davis said he knew Mr Harawira would order a recount.
He said he was not worried and it was unlikely Mr Harawira would earn the majority back through a recount.
The recount is expected to take three to five days to complete, delaying the writ declaration and the election of list MPs.
