Two police officers were assaulted during a routine traffic stop in the Hamilton suburb of Fairfield just after midnight.
Police said they stopped a vehicle with three people in it and they were speaking to the driver when he allegedly got out a baseball bat and assaulted the officers.
Both were taken to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition.
One officer has been discharged with a concussion and the other has suffered a skull fracture and remains in hospital in a stable condition, police said.
A 17-year-old male will appear in the Youth Court tomorrow in connection with the attack.
