The National reported on Thursday night police on a roadblock between Goroka and Kainantu intercepted the consignment which is reported to involve the brother of an elections candidate and a Lae-based police detective.

Eastern Highlands police commander Superintendent Alex Ndrasal said the armed detective was obviously escorting the illegal consignment bound for the Kagua-Erave district.

Eight people were arrested.

Superintendent Ndrasal told the paper the army uniforms could be worn by mercenaries under the disguise of defence force personnel during polling.
