Carlos Sainz win Dakar Rally

Spain's two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz has won the Dakar Rally for the first time after finishing second in the final stage in Argentina.

Sainz, the WRC champion in 1990 and 1992, had ledsince the fifth stage and clinched two stages on the 32nd running of the gruelling event, which was moved to South American last year after threats of terrorist attacks in north Africa.

His Volkswagen teammate and closest rival Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar won the final stage, a 335 kilometre special from Santa Rosa.

Sainz finished 2min 12sec overall clear of Al-Attiyah with another Volkswagen driver, Mark Miller, of the United States third .

Frenchman Cyril Despres won his third Dakar motorcycling title.
