The Defence Force has received government approval for a $1.5 billion upgrade of its buildings and facilities.
Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee said many of the 5000 buildings on defence land were old and needed modernising.
He said while there were no plans to close any main camps, large training areas or bases, there might be some internal reorganisation of those sites.
Mr Brownlee said most of the money would go towards upgrading facilities in Auckland, Manawatu and Canterbury.
In June, the government announced it would spend $20bn on the Defence Force in a long-term investment plan that included a new cyber security system for defence networks.
