Latest figures show the number of people on the waiting list for a Housing New Zealand home has decreased in Auckland but continues to rise in Christchurch.
The Government wants to sell 2000 state houses to community providers this year as it seeks to cut the number of homes it owns.
The number of people on the Auckland waiting list is down by 270 for the three months to the end of June, compared to the three months to the end of March.
In contrast, the number needing a home in Christchurch has continued to increase, up 27 over the same period.
The result represents an improvement on the period before that, when the Christchurch waiting list increased by 35.
The increases are mostly in the priority A category which includes those considered to be at risk.
