American Samoa judge wants liquor law enforced

08:26 am on 30 October 2010

American Samoa's District Court Judge John Ward has hit out at the government for not prosecuting stores which sell beer after 10 pm.

The judge said in his nearly 30 years on the bench he has not seen one store being prosecuted for violating the law which prohibits stores from selling beer after 10pm.

Judge Ward was sentencing David Umu who was charged in connection with a car accident in which teenage passengers were injured and the defendant left the scene.

The judge says each weekend blood is spilled because alcohol is available day and night and the government doesn;t seem to care.

Judge Ward said maybe it would take a civil suit by victims of crimes fueled by alcohol for the government to take notice.
