A $1.8 million upgrade of a wharf at Whanganui Port will begin next month as part of a plan to revitalise maritime industry in the city.
The District Council bought the port back from River City Port in 2010 for $2.75m.
Mayor Annette Main said the work on Wharf 1 will allow it to cater for heavy trucks, cranes and similar equipment.
The upgrade signalled the city was committed to the port and its future development.
It was hoped the port would become more viable and house more onshore-related business.
