A mayor in the Northern Marianas has welcomed a proposed Senate bill that would stop the Department from Public Lands from leasing land for any military live-fire or bomb training.
The bill, if passed, would prohibit the department from leasing public land for any live-fire military activity unless it's ratified by the people at a general or special election.
The mayor of the Northern Islands, Jerome Aldan, whose district includes Pagan, an island the US military wants to use for bomb training, says the bill is commendable as it recognises the scarce amount of land in the CNMI, and understands the importance of preserving it for future generations.
