He was 66-year-old Fuk-Fu Joseph Kwok.
His body was found on Celtic Crescent in Ellerslie around 8pm on Monday, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A post-mortem revealed injuries "consistent with foul play", police said, and that he likely died at the weekend.
"Police and Victim Support are working with the whānau through the tragedy they have suffered," Detective Inspector Scott Beard said on Thursday.
Enquiries at the scene and nearby were ongoing.
"Police continue to appeal to the public for any information that may assist us with our investigation," Beard said.

Kwok's wife, 67-year-old Mei Han Chong, was reported as missing. Police earlier said they were keeping an open mind about her potential involvement in his death, saying she might also be a victim.
