Cook Islands Resort suffers a million dollars damage in three recent cyclones

19:21 pm on 21 February 2005

The manager of a Cook Islands resort says it will take at least five months to recover from the impact of three cyclones in a fortnight.

The manager of The Rarotonga Sunset, Nick Reeves, says all three of the cyclones, Meena, Nancy, and Olaf, battered the resort and nine beachfront rooms were completely ruined, and will have to be rebuilt.

He says other resorts on the western side of Rarotonga also suffered major damage to beachfront rooms and all the resorts will have to replace the sand on their beaches.

Mr Reeves says they are still waiting on insurance assessors, but estimates losses at more than one million US dollars.

But he says they are still able to operate the remainder of the resort.

"Oh we're quite resilient here, we've had these cyclones before. The other rooms, we've got, we've got our garden rooms, they're operational, and the swimming pool is fine. And we are also in the process of building another 23 rooms which will be finished by the first of June."
