Former labour contractor and owner to pay more than $250,000 over employment standard breaches

A former Bay of Plenty kiwifruit labour contractor and its former owner have been ordered to pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for exploiting six migrant workers.

Raj Kiwi and former director Rajasekar Chellappa have been penalised $160,000 and $70,000, respectively.

The penalities are in relation to 49 employment minimum standards breaches including minimum wage, holiday pay, not keeping records and absent employment agreements.

The contractor has also been ordered to pay wage arrears of more than $26,000 to the workers.

The total payment is more than $250,000.
