Australia's longest running claim under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act of the Northern Territory has finally been declared Aboriginal land.
The Kenbi Land Claim - on nearly 60,000 hectares on a peninsula west of Darwin - was made 37 years ago.
But the Northern Territory government passed regulations that successfully stymied the claim, shrouding it in court proceedings for a decade.
The peninsula was used as a dump for debris from Cyclone Tracey's 1974 destruction of Darwin, and cleaning up asbestos, pesticides and heavy metals is costing taxpayers $32 million.
