Marine reserve plan rejected

16:01 pm on 21 August 2010

Campaigners have lost a 15-year fight to create a marine reserve in Akaroa harbour.

The Government has said no to the proposal, which has been across the desks of at least six Ministers of Conservation.

The current Minister, Kate Wilkinson, has rejected the plan on the grounds a marine reserve would be harmful to recreational fishing.

She says it's regrettable the process has dragged on for so long.
