One person has died after firefighters fought to free people trapped following a two-vehicle crash on Gibbston Highway.
Emergency services were alerted about 10.30am on State Highway 6 to reports of the crash, with one vehicle leaving the road and going down a bank.
Police have confirmed one person died at the scene.
St John said two patients were transported to Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown, one in a serious condition and one in a moderate condition.
Police said one lane of the highway is now open and traffic control is in place.
Motorists were asked to expect delays or avoid travelling.
Earlier, Fire and Emergency said staff were working to free people from the vehicle that went down the bank while an unknown number of people were freed from the other vehicle using the jaws of life.
A hazmat unit from Invercargill is dealing with an unknown substance that spilt from the vehicle over the bank, covering some firefighters.
They were getting cleaned up, Fire and Emergency said.
