Traffic into parts of Southern Highlands Province and all of Hela Province in Papua New Guinea has been disrupted by a major landslide.

The slip at Onja village in Poroma is the second major blow in a month to the region which is home to several hundred thousand people.

Late last month, traffic came to a standstill after a bridge collapse near Nipa station.

The Post Courier reports the Poroma slip on Wednesday was massive, cutting off the Highlands Highway from Mendi into the Nipa-Kutubu and Hela Province.

It says reports it has say food gardens and houses were destroyed but no lives had been lost.
