There were goals aplenty on the opening day of football action on Saturday at the Pacific Games in New Caledonia.

The hosts thrashed Vanuatu 5-0 in the men's competition to begin their title defence in clinical fashion.

Tuvalu and Papua New Guinea's men's teams both notched four goals in wins over American Samoa and Cook Islands while Solomon Islands put seven goals past Guam.

In Mont Dore Fiji recovered from a slow start to outclass Tahiti 3-0.

The men's teams return to action tomorrow while in the women's draw Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia will be searching for their second straight wins this afternoon.
