Work is well underway on a large rockwall aimed at protecting a dump above Fox Glacier township. The same dump released tonnes of rubbish during a storm earlier this year, sparking a clean up effort consisting of hundreds of volunteers, the Defence Force and the Department of Conservation. At the time, DoC told Checkpoint they were racing to get the work completed before Labour Weekend, when heavy rain usually starts to hit the reason causing flooding. The council is looking at how the dump can be moved permanetly, but Westland Mayor Bruce Smith told Checkpoint South Island reporter Logan Church that something had to be done in the meantime.
