Industry body to meet with actors' union over Hobbit

The Screen Production and Development Association says a union representing actors has finally agreed to meet with it over employment concerns regarding filming The Hobbit.

SPADA says it has been calling for such a meeting with the New Zealand Actors Equity for more than a year.

While this meeting is a major development , the actors' union is continuing to call for a private meeting with the makers of the film, including producer Sir Peter Jackson regarding a collective contract.

That demand has so far been ignored.

SPADA says it is concerned the Actors Equity is still pushing for this meeting and hopes its meeting will resolve matters.

It warns the meeting is not to negotiate a collective contract for actors, but to talk about a way forward with terms and conditions for actors in New Zealand.

The meeting is expected to be held before the end of this week.
