The Commonwealth Health Center (CHCC) will become only a handful of government facilities in Micronesia to tap solar power as its energy source after its board of trustees approved a alternative power project.

CHCC gave the go-ahead to the first phase of the solar power project that would enable the islands' lone hospital to produce 160 kilowatts of its own power from solar panels.

CHCC awarded the contract to build Phase 1 of the solar power project to Micronesia Renewable Energy.

The first phase of the $US902,301 project will be partially funded by a $US560,000 grant provided by the Department of the Interior.

The remaining US$342,301 will be sourced from CHCC's fiscal year 2019 budget request from the Legislature.
