New Zealand runner finishes second in the inaugural Great Australian Run

The New Zealand runner Alice Mason has finished second in the women's race of the inaugural Great Australian Run in Melbourne.

Mason has completed the 15 kilometre race, held in Melbourne's inner southern suburbs, 44 seconds behind winner Kenya's Catherine Ndereba, the Beijing Olympic marathon silver medallist.

Ethiopian distance running superstar Haile Gebrselassie won the men's race in a time of 42 minutes and 40 seconds.

Gebrselassie broke clear of Kenyan Patrick Makau with 4km to run.

Makau was second in 43:15, while Collis Birmingham overtook fellow Australian Craig Mottram in the closing stages to claim third place in 43:35.
