American Samoa cannery shutting for maintenance

American Samoa's largest private employer the StarKist Samoa cannery is shutting down for one week for planned maintenance work.

The cannery employs about 2,000 people and its closure is expected to affect other businesses and the wider economy.

Also shutting down at the same time is Talofa Systems, which manufactures cans for StarKist and employs about 200 workers.

StarKist's corporate spokesperson Michelle Faist said the cannery would shutdown from April 17.
