A man who escaped from police into the ceiling of Auckland Hospital has appeared in court.
Andrew Clive Watkins was charged with escaping from the custody of a police officer and intentionally damaging the hospital's ceiling.
He is also charged with assaulting a person with a steel bar and possession of an offensive weapon.
The 25-year-old entered no plea in Waitakere District Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody until Thursday.
Mr Watkins was in hospital after injuring an ankle while trying to evade police on Sunday and climbed into the ceiling the following morning in an attempt to get away.
The Emergency Department was evacuated and about 44 patients treated in the atrium and corridors during the police search.
Mr Watkins was found after about seven hours.
