Christchurch police attend serious incident, close part of street

A man has been critically wounded in an an assault in Bexley.

Police said they responded to a serious incident at 6.20am on Monday, and a search was under way after the assault.

The incident happened on Pages Road between Portchester and Farnborough streets.

About 200m of Pages Road was cordoned off and half a dozen police cars were on site.

RNZ's reporter at the scene said it appeared police were entering an area of Bexley Park near the Velocity Karts premises.

Police said someone on the relatively busy road may have witnessed the event or captured it on dashcam, and asked anyone with informatiom to call 111.

They asked people to avoid the area.

The area is being described as a popular dog walking spot, but police are yet to comment on reports the victim was stabbed while walking a dog.

Bexley resident Hannah McDonell, who lived opposite the park, said she often walked her dog there and many others did the same.

Another resident who lives opposite the park said it was always busy and was not known for violence.
