Libyan defector found dead

15:50 pm on 30 April 2012

One of the most prominent Libyans to defect from Colonel Gaddafi's regime during the uprising last year has been found dead in Vienna.

Police say the body of former oil minister Shukri Ghanem, 69, was found in the Danube River. There were no external signs of violence.

A post-mortem has been ordered.

Mr Ghanem defected in Rome last June, citing daily bloodshed. He served as prime minister from 2003 to 2006 and then as oil minister until 2011.

The Libyan uprising ended in October last year with the killing of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
