Technical problems with the automated system at Christchurch's new Bus Interchange has caused its opening to be postponed.

The interchange was supposed to begin operating on Monday, but last minute issues with software have meant it is not reliable enough to be rolled out.

The temporary central bus station will remain in place, and services will not be disrupted.

Acting director of the Christchurch Central Development Unit Baden Ewart said the postponement was hugely disappointing, as the first stage of the build was scheduling.

He said the contractor, Southbase, could not guarantee that the system would operate smoothly, so the decision had been made to delay the opening.

A new opening date will be announced as soon as possible.
