A waste minimisation organisation says the proposal to build a waste-to-energy plant in Waikato will face fierce opposition.
The proposed plant in Te Awamutu will incinerate 150,000 tonnes of waste a year to generate electric power.
The application to build the plant at 401 Racecourse Road was lodged with Waipā District Council by Global Contracting Solutions in December 2021.
"Incinerators are just another form of disposal like landfill," Zero Waste Network general manager Dorte Wray said.
"This one would have a dramatic climate impact."
Wray said the organisation stopped the waste-to-energy proposal in Feilding and will fight to do the same in Te Awamutu.
"Along with the human health and climate impacts, the proposal site is subject to severe flooding. This incinerator would pose a major hazard to the community."
The council said plans for the plant will be publicly notified and people will be able to make submissions when the application is notified on 15 September.
