The ship at the centre of an emergency at Port of Timaru was unable to be evacuated this afternoon, because a potential Covid-19 patient was on board.
Firefighters were called to the port at about 1.30pm when it was believed a toxic gas was leaking from a 30 tonne container aboard the vessel.
Other areas of the port were evacuated.
However, investigations found there was no risk and staff have returned to work.
