Police have told local media that Fred Konga was driving with two companions around midnight on Wednesday when two other vehicles blocked their car in an ambush.

He was reportedly shot in the back and abdomen, before the killers drove away.

Paramedics arrived a short time later to find Mr Konga's dead body slumped back in the driver's seat.

The other two passengers in his vehicle were not injured during the shooting.

Mr Konga, who hailed from Jiwaka province, had resigned as Chief Executive of the Authority earlier this year to contest the recent election.
