Police in Canterbury are investigating how a five-year-old boy sustained serious head injuries that left him in a critical condition

They said the boy got home from school around midday yesterday and an ambulance was called to his Papanui home at 1.30pm.
The boy had serious head injuries and was taken to Christchurch Hospital.
Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson said detectives had spoken to the boy's family, staff at his school and everyone who had contact with him after he arrived home.
Mr Anderson said the police investigation was focused on events throughout the day.
