As it happened: Eight dead in New York vehicle attack

Eight people have been killed and almost a dozen are seriously injured in New York after a truck was driven into people using a busy bike path.

What you need to know:

  • Eight people have been confirmed dead, with another 11 suffering serious injuries
  • A rented Home Depot truck was driven down a cycle and pedestrian path in lower Manhattan, shortly after 3pm local time.
  • The truck then collided with a school bus, injuring two children and two adults on board.
  • After crashing the rented truck, the 29-year-old suspect was shot by police after brandishing a paintball gun and a pellet gun.
  • The suspect is now in custody.
  • New York mayor Bill de Blasio said the case was being treated as an "act of terror", but New York governor Andrew Cuomo said there was no evidence to suggest a wider plot or scheme.
  • The NYPD Commissioner said a statement made by the suspect when he exited the vehicle was "consistent" with a terrorist attack.
