An Auckland rugby player has been sent to hospital this morning after being knocked unconscious in a post-match fight.
Police said 30 - 40 players and spectators were involved in the fight which broke out at the Otahuhu rugby grounds after a game between Otahuhu College and Tangaroa College.
Senior sergeant Jeremy Field said by the time the police arrived, the fighting had stopped and the 14-year-old boy was found lying unconscious on the field.
"It's reported that he was knocked in the head and he was just unconscious for a length of time."
The boy has since improved and has been speaking to the police.
Mr Field said they were yet to speak to a number of other witnesses and charges could be laid.
The player was transferred to Middlemore Hospital with moderate injuries.
