Wellington residents jolted awake by shallow earthquake

Some Wellington residents have been jolted awake by a shallow earthquake on Sunday morning.

The magnitude 3.9 quake registered at a depth of 14 kilometres and had its epicentre 10 kilometres east of Lower Hutt.

Nearly 9000 people have made 'felt it' reports on the government's GeoNet website since the quake struck just after 6.30am.

GeoNet classified the earthquake as a moderate one.
