Barcelona's goal-scoring machine Lionel Messi's new mark of 86 in a calendar year could last another 40 years, in the opinion of the previous record holder Gerd Mueller of West Germany.

Messi set his record with a double in a Spanish league match at the weekend, and Mueller, who's a youth coach at Bayern Munich, hopes the Argentine scores a few more in the remaining matches of this year.

Messi, who is expected to secure a fourth successive World Player of the Year award next month, has netted 74 times for Barca and 12 for Argentina this year.

Mueller scored his 85 in 60 matches for club and country in 1972.
