The event was held in the Hawke's Bay city, with some events close by around Hastings, from Wednesday through to yesterday.

Last year, the festival was cancelled at the last minute due to a Covid-19 outbreak in Auckland.

This year, it was able to run under the red traffic light.

Festival director Greg Howie said thousands of people would have come to Hawke's Bay for the festivities.

"We're really happy with how the celebration went - we brought people into the city, they were dining in restaurants, shopping, drinking in the bars - it gave a much needed economic boost to the region," he said.

While he was still working through ticket attendance numbers, most of the big events including the car parade and the plane show, had to be cancelled.

But he said the key events on Friday and Saturday nights were sold out, including the Dining with Stars Cars at the Buick Motor Garage, concerts at the MTG centre, dining events at Hawke's Bay Club.

He said the festival garden bar, set up in a tent on the city's waterfront, was at capacity.
