Police are searching for a man after a young girl was indecently assaulted in a South Auckland park last week.

The man approached the child - who was playing in Aronia Park at about 8pm on Friday - and offered to walk her home.

Police say he then indecently assaulted her in a nearby bush.

The man fled the scene after she screamed for help, prompting a neighbour to call the police.

Officers were unable to find the man, and had appealed to the public for help.

Several people were in the park at the time and police are urging them to come forward.

Any CCTV footage is also being sought, and any residents on Aronia Way, Everglade Drive, Kerri Anne Place and Correa Court who may have some have been asked to contact police.

Anyone driving in that area at around between 6pm and 8pm with recorded dash cam footage have also been urged to contact police.

The girl was being cared for by her family and supported by police.
