A man has been arrested in relation to an incident today where a person was found dead in a car outside the Counties Manukau Police Station in Auckland.
A man drove to the police station this afternoon to speak to officers, and shortly afterwards, a body was located in a vehicle outside.
Police said the man arrived after 1.10pm.
"Shortly afterwards, police have located a person deceased in the vehicle," Detective Inspector Karen Bright said in a statement.
"The man is currently in police custody and assisting us with our enquiries, which are still in the very early stages in establishing what has occurred."
In a statement, police said a 24-year-old man has been charged with an assault-related offence.
He is expected to appear in the Manukau District Court tomorrow.
Police say a post-mortem will take place tomorrow, and the man's charge will likely be upgraded.
Police are also at an address on Mona Avenue in Māngere Bridge conducting a scene examination.
At this stage they are describing the incident as a "sudden death".
