It is the 11th consecutive day the state has recorded a daily infections number below 50.

The rolling 14-day average of daily cases has dropped to 34.4 in metropolitan Melbourne, from 36.2 yesterday.

Regional Victoria's rolling case average is now 1.6, down from 1.8 yesterday.

Today's number of new infections is the state's lowest since nine new infections were reported on June 16.

The ABC says the declining numbers have created a renewed sense of hope that Melbourne might see restrictions ease ahead of schedule.

More details about the latest coronavirus infections in Victoria are expected to be released by Premier Daniel Andrews at a media conference later today.

Outside Victoria

In New South Wales, health officials are working to locate people who may have come into contact with a Sydney taxi driver, believed to have worked for up to 10 days while infectious.

In Queensland, restrictions could be relaxed on crowds attending the AFL grand final in Brisbane, if a trial tonight is successful.

Tonight 200 volunteers at a Port Adelaide-Collingwood game will be seated in a section at 75 percent capacity, instead of the current 50 percent.

Their compliance to Covid-safe requirements - including mask wearing - will be monitored before authorities give the go-ahead for more spectators to be allowed at future games.

Regional driving tests resume

Driving tests and other licensing appointments will recommence across regional Victoria today, the State Government has announced.

The first priority for VicRoads will be re-booking the approximately 5000 regional Victorians who had their appointments postponed earlier in the year due to coronavirus restrictions.

Once that backlog is cleared, which VicRoads estimates may take until November, people will be able to make new bookings.
