American Samoa restores monument to French sailors killed in 1787

The American Samoa Historic Preservation Office has completed the restoration of the 123-year-old Aasutuai monument at "Massacre Bay" dedicated to 12 French sailors who died during a conflict with Samoans on December 11th 1787.

The sailors were part of the first European scientific expedition to set foot on Tutuila Island.

The restoration project was paid for with funds fromthe US Historic Preservation Fund and a grant from the French Government.
