A police spokesperson says the accused assaulted the man and stole money and jewellery, before attempting to steal a motor vehicle and fleeing on foot.

Three men were apprehended nearby.

The men, who are all from Tauranga and are aged from 18 to 22, have been arrested and charged with aggravated burglary, threatening to kill, assault and attempting to unlawfully take a motor vehicle.

They will appear in the Tauranga District Court on Monday.
