A spokesperson for designer Kyle Lockwood says the Royal New Zealand Air Force 3 Squadron has complained that Mr Lockwood's designs are a copy of their insignia.

But Chris Mullaine said Mr Lockwood's design pre-dated the squadron's 2010 logo.

Mr Mullaine said Mr Lockwood released his design in 2003 and won a competition for it in 2004.

He said Mr Lockwood had gifted his design to the Government, so it would be up to the Government to defend any copyright.

Mr Lockwood has released two videos telling voters about the flags he had designed.
