Fatal fire not deemed suspicious

14:23 pm on 31 October 2013

The Fire Service says it does not believe a fatal house fire in rural South Auckland is suspicious.

Firefighters were called to the Mangatawhiri house on Tuesday night and found one man dead after they extinguished the blaze.

Fire service assistant area commander Craig Monrad says specialist fire investigators have examined the scene and do not believe the fire was an act of arson.

Mr Monrad says the house was totally destroyed, leaving little evidence, but investigators have traced the start of the fire to the kitchen.

Police hope to have post-mortem results later on Thursday. The man has not yet been identified.
