One person died and another was critically injured when two vehicles collided north of the intersection of Otaihanga Road and State Highway One on Friday morning.

Car review website dogandlemon.com editor Clive Matthew-Wilson says the accident could have been prevented with wire-rope barriers.

He says he predicted further crashes on that stretch of highway after the Transport Agency delayed the project which was meant to start next year.

NZTA state highways manager Rod James says other roading projects have taken priority.

He could not say when the barriers are likely to be installed.
