Two netball titans hugged, likely for the last time as rivals, when Laura Langman and Maria Folau farewelled each other following the Sunshine Coast Lightning's capture of the national league minor premiership.
With both players free agents at the end of this Suncorp Super Netball season, New Zealand and Sunshine Coast captain Langman playfully hinted the Lightning's 58-37 thumping of Folau's Adelaide Thunderbirds could be their last hurrah on opposing sides.
"It might have been," Langman said when asked if she expected it was their last meeting.
"Both of us want to make sure we live every moment because when you get to this side of your career, you're never quite sure."
Langman, 33, and Folau, 32, are greats of the game.
They have combined for more 300 Tests for the Silver Ferns, including last month's Netball World Cup success in Liverpool.
They won Commonwealth Games titles in 2006 and 2010 and played together for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and Northern Mystics in the now defunct trans-Tasman league.
Both are expected to be part of the Constellation Cup series for the Silver Ferns in October but, beyond that, their futures are a mystery.
Folau hinted before the World Cup that she was "close to the end", and was watched from the stands at the Sunshine Coast by husband Israel Folau.
She shared smiles and emotional embraces with both Langman and the Sunshine Coast's New Zealand national coach Noeline Taurua after the game.
Folau and Langman are regarded as the world's best players in their respective positions and Langman said she adored watching her good mate play.
"It was special and I loved watching her in action. She makes it rain," Langman said.
"To have played in a World Cup with her and won a gold, it's been a very special year.
"We've weathered some storms."
Departing coach Taurua is in line for a fairytale finish with the Sunshine Coast, with the Lightning to host the NSW Swifts in next Saturday's grand final qualifier.
