There was a fatal collision between two trucks on State Highway 2 at Takapau in Hawke's Bay on Wednesday night.
Emergency services were called to the accident site at 8.35pm.
A spokesperson says one of the truck drivers died, and the other was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
