The New Zealand Herald / Digipoll shows National polled support of 48.8% while Labour fell to 30.9% with most of their losses picked up by NZ First and the Greens.

Mr Shearer told Morning Report that polls go up and down, but the overall trend for the party is headed in the right direction.

He said the only poll that matters is the general election in 2014.

Mr Shearer defended Labour's policies, saying all the party can do is push its policies, including more homes, cheaper power and job creation to prevent people heading across the Tasman.
